Hepatitis C: sintomatología, transmisión, fisiopatología y prevenciónDo not delay your attention in Mayo ClinicRemarked Conditions We are welcoming patients in Mayo Clinic.. Synopsis The liver The liver is its largest internal organ. On the size of a football, it is mainly at the top right of your abdomen, below the diaphragm and above your stomach. Hepatitis C is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver, sometimes causing severe liver damage. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by contaminated blood. Until recently, hepatitis C treatment requires weekly injections and oral medications that many people infected by HCV cannot take because of other health problems or unacceptable side effects. That's changing. Today, chronic HCV is generally curable with oral medications taken every day for two to six months. However, about half of people with HCV do not know they are infected, mainly because they have no symptoms, which can take decades to appear. Therefore, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all adults aged 18 to 79 be tested by hepatitis C, including those without symptoms or known liver disease. The largest group at risk includes all those born between 1945 and 1965, a population five times more likely to be infected than those born in other years. Products & ServicesSymptoms Long-term infection with hepatitis C is known as chronic hepatitis C. Chronic hepatitis C is usually a "silient" infection for many years, until the virus damages the liver enough to cause signs and symptoms of liver disease. Signs and symptoms include: Each chronic hepatitis C infection begins with an acute phase. Acute hepatitis C is usually not diagnosed because it rarely causes symptoms. When there are signs and symptoms, they may include jaundice, along with fatigue, nausea, fever, and muscle aches. Acute symptoms occur one to three months after exposure to the virus and last two weeks to three months. Acute hepatitis C infection does not always become chronic. Some people clear the HCV from their bodies after the acute phase, a result known as spontaneous viral cleansing. In studies of people diagnosed with acute HV, spontaneous viral cleaning rates have varied from 15% to 25%. Acute hepatitis C also responds well to antiviral therapy. CausesHepatitis C infection is caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV). The infection spreads when the blood contaminated with the virus enters the bloodstream of an uninfected person. At the global level, HCV exists in several different forms, known as genotypes. Seven different genotypes of HCV and more than 67 subtypes have been identified. The most common HCV genotype in the United States is type 1. Although chronic hepatitis C follows a similar course regardless of the genotype of the infection virus, treatment recommendations vary depending on the viral genotype.
